Soufriere is a town on the west coast of St. Lucia. Soufriere simply meaning, "sulphur in the air," it was given this name after the volcano. Originally founded by the French it was the original capital of the island. There were large estates run by plantation owner of French origin & their descendants still live in the area. The British invaded St. Lucia shortly after, but the slaves & French deserters fought them in a guerrilla campaign until 1803 when they were defeated. St. Lucia became a British colony. Today, Soufriere is more dependent on tourism rather than agriculture. The piton is just south of the town & there are several attractions in the area. Soufriere Volcano in St. Lucia is considered as the only "drive- in" volcano in the world! It locally known as the Sulphur Springs.
